Hawaii Calls
As soon as Joseph Kekeku slid a piece of steel along the plucked strings of his guitar in 1889 in Hawaii, the "steel guitar" became the signature sound of the Islands. By the 1920s, Hawaiian music had arrived on the shores of the US mainland, where it would outsell all the other genres of popular music and dominate popular culture. Visit the islands where the steel guitar sound began as Native Hawaiian, Mexican, German and US music all converged.
